NBC News Special Correspondent Chelsea Clinton interviewed teachers, students and families in Central Falls over in January to report on a rare national example of a public charter school and a public school district partnering to bring the latest instructional practices to classrooms.
The Learning Community, a public charter school, and the Central Falls public schools began working together district-wide three years ago to dramatically improve reading achievement. Now active in every K-2 classroom in Central Falls, the Growing Readers Initiative centers on giving teachers the support and the leadership to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of students. By June 2011, 73% of K-2 students in Central Falls district schools were reading at or above the national benchmark, up from 37% in October 2009.
This work is part of a larger effort by The Learning Community to support effective teaching strategies through a cadre of teacher consultants who work with their peers to share best practices. The Learning Community is actively seeking other district partners and investors to reach 500 teachers and 10,000 students in the next 5 years.
